Green Wall and Roof Garden Installer
With the challenge of improving on and expanding greenspace in our cities, many horticulturists, landscape architects, landscapers and garden designers are looking at other options to improve the environment in built-up areas. One of these options is to incorporate gardens on the sides of buildings and building rooftop gardens. There are many positives to gain by installing green walls and roof top gardens to existing and new buildings such as environmental, economic and social benefits. Many such projects are designed for and constructed in urban areas where there is a lack of space, utilising the roof top of buildings for example, can have many benefits for the staff which work in that building. There are also many benefits of incorporating rooftop gardens and green walls into an urbanised
area: they are aesthetically pleasing, offer recreational spaces, help
with water movement/retention and the environment.
Where They Work
Most installers work on existing sites and are commissioned by the owners of the buildings to install these features - with some governments around the world encouraging this type of development. Most of these gardens are installed in quite harsh conditions; the structures containing the plants and the plants themselves need to be able to withstand some environmental extremes, such as wind and solar radiation.
What is Needed
People who have a good understanding and are qualified to design and construct both green walls and rooftop gardens will be in demand. An installer with have
a good understanding of structural and building requirements,
appropriate plant selection, and a good knowledge of garden design and garden maintenance techniques specific to green walls and roofs.
Designing and installing a green wall will involve constructing a
vertical garden which may be over 100 meters tall.
