This versatile, evergreen shrub grows to a height of 7 metres with a spread of 3 metres. It has smooth, narrow leaves to approximately 12 cms in length. It bears sprays of cream coloured flowers in the summer. These are followed by small purple fruits.

Culture

Portugal Laurel is best grown in moist, fertile, well drained soil. It will thrive in sun or partial shade, and is drought and frost resistant. It doesn't require regular pruning, but it will benefit from the removal of dead and damaged growth over winter, and pruning can help to keep it compact. It can be propagated both by seed and cuttings.
