Holm Oak

Deciduous tree with rounded habit, 25m high by 15m wide. Young leaves have spiny margins (it is also known as 'Holly Oak'), becoming entire as they mature. Mature leaves are dark green with a white underside. Flowers are pendant catkins. Fruit are small acorns.

Uses

Ornamental tree suitable for parks, larger gardens, windbreaks and coastal sites.

Culture

It prefers full sun and fertile, moist, well-drained soils. It tolerates coastal conditions and alkaline soil, but is drought and frost sensitive. Susceptible to oak root fungus and leaf miner in humid areas. Propagate by seed or suckers in autumn, or grafting in winter.
