Bird Cherry

Deciduous tree to 15m high by 3m wide, usually smaller in cultivation. Scented, red-brown bark. Leaves are elliptical with serrate margins, often turning orange in autumn. Flowers are white, scented, pendant racemes in early summer. Fruit are black drupes.

Ornamental flowering tree for parks and gardens.

Culture

Tolerant of a wide range of conditions, it prefers full sun and a sheltered position in fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Frost tolerant, but drought sensitive. Propagate by seed or grafting.
