Kniphofia
Asphodelaceae
Torch Lily, Poker Plant, Red-Hot-Poker, Tritoma
The herbaceous species have green grass-like leaves whereas the perennial varieties have broader strap-shaped leaves. They produce strong, smooth, upright flower stems which bear striking pointed spikes of compact tubular flowers the ends of which face downwards. Flowers are mostly in shades or red, orange, yellow and are frequently two-tone.
Uses
Border plants, group plantings, cottage gardens.
Culture
They grow in any well-drained soil but prefer a sunny position. They do not need rich soils and they will grow poorly in wet soils. Apply organic mulch over winter to protect crowns from frost. In summer, fertilise with organic feed or add organic mulch. Staking is unnecessary. Cut back spent flowers close to crown to encourage further flowers.
Propagation
They may be propagated from seeds sown in spring which should flower the following summer. They may also be divided in spring.
