Golden Penda

Large shrubs to trees, with large clusters of bright flowers. Glossy green elliptical foliage. New growth may be reddish or hairy. 
 

Uses

Feature plant in gardens or parks, street tree, boundary plant. Very attractive to birds. There is a dwarf variety of X. chrysanthus available.
 

Culture

Mostly hardy and adaptable to cultivation. Prefer full sun and moist fertile loam soils.
May be pruned to obtain thicker specimen.

Propagation

Propagation by fresh seed or cuttings.

Cultivars

Ten species are indigenous to Australia, including:

X. chrysanthus (Golden Penda) - Small tree to 10m. If by cutting it may only grow to 3-5m. Brilliant large clusters of gold/yellow flowers. Pink-red new foliage flushes. Well established in the ornamental industry.

X. whitei (Red/Brown Penda) - 15m tree with large clusters of golden flowers. Young shoots are hairy. Likes an abundance of water.

X. youngii (Red Penda) -  2 to 5m shrub. Small red cluster flowers in spring and summer. Note: this species is too hard to acquire and grow in domestic gardens.
