Chinese wisteria

Woody, deciduous climber to 30m high, usually much less. The leaves are compound and light green with 7-13 leaflets. Fragrant, purple pea-like flowers are held in racemes up to 30cm long. They appear in early spring, prior to the leaves.

Uses

Suitable for growing on an archway or on a pergola where it provides shade in summer and allows light through during winter. Can also be trained to grow as a free-standing shrub or standard.

Culture

Grow in full sun in a cool or temperate climate. Prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Frost tolerant. Provide strong support. Prune after flowering and again in late winter as required. Propagate by grafting or seed, however flowers of seed grown plants are often not true to type.
