Vitis coignetiae

Vitaceae

Crimson glory vine

Fast-growing, woody-stemmed, deciduous climber to 15m high, spreading by curling tendrils. The leaves are large and rounded, turning bright shades of red and orange in autumn. Small green flowers occur in summer, followed by clusters of small purple-black berrries.

Uses

Ornamental climber suitable for a pergola where it can provide shade in summer and allow light through during the winter.

Culture

Grow in full sun or semi-shade in cool and temperate climates. Prefers fertile, moist and well-drained soil. Tolerates frost, with the leaf colour better in colder regions. Requires support. Propagate by cuttings. Susceptible to mildew in regions with high humidity in summer.
