Festuca rubra
Poaceae
Creeping Red Fescue
Hardwearing, rhizomatous perennial turf grass. The tuft-forming stem is surrounded by a red-purple sheath. Leaves are green, wiry and slender, growing to 15cm if left unmown. Flowers are narrow, purple-green panicles.
Uses
Suitable for sports fields and low maintenance turf areas in cooler climates.
Culture
Prefers full sun or part shade and a cool or mild climate. Grows best in well-drained, acidic soils. It will tolerate dry conditions and low-fertility soils, but is susceptible to both high and low temperatures. Can be mown as low as 10mm from the soil surface, but should be grown higher in shaded sites. Propagate by seed or rhizomes.
