Hybrid between E. grandiflorum and E. pinnatum. Spreading herbaceous perennial 30cm high by 30cm wide. Leaves are heart-shaped, with young leaves having a red-purple tinge, becoming greener with maturity. Flowers are pendant, cup-shaped and yellow with red spurs, occurring in spring. A number of varieties featuring different coloured flowers and foliage are available.
Uses
Ornamental groundcover best suited to shady sites in garden beds, cottage gardens and woodland areas.
Culture
Suitable for full sun or shade, it does best in shady conditions and temperate climates. Prefers moist, fertile and well-drained soil. Tolerates frost and if grown in the shade will tolerate dry soils. Prune before new growth appears in early spring for optimum foliage and flower displays. Propagate from fresh seed or by division in autumn or spring.
