Slow-growing, short lived herbaceous perennial to 50cm high by 15cm wide, usually grown as a biennial. Dwarf cultivars can be grown as annuals. Bright green, broadly lanceolate leaves. The single or double fragrant flowers occur in spring and summer, with colours ranging from white, pink and red. Some varieties feature flowers with stripes or dark centres.
Uses
Ornamental flower suitable for rockeries, cottage gardens and as a bedding plant.
Culture
Suitable for full sun and a cool or temperate climate. Prefers well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. Frost tolerant. Stake if necessary. Self seeds readily. Propagate by seed, cuttings or layering.
