Rhizomatous perennial with upright leaves growing approx 1m high. The flower stems are held above the foliage. In late spring flowers 5-10cm wide feature white, purple and blue petals, often veined with a contrasting colour. Many cultivars are available.

Uses

Ornamental perennial suitable for cottage gardens and garden beds.

Culture

Prefers full sun and a cool or temperate climate, prefering some shade in warmer regions. Grows best in fertile, moist and slightly acidic soil. Tolerates frost and waterlogged soil. Propagate by seed in autumn or by division after flowering.
