Fast-growing, upright biennial to 60cm high, usually grown as an annual. The leaves are grey-green and lanceolate. The four-petalled, purple flowers are borne on spikes in spring. Varieties feature a range of colours and double flowers.

Uses

Flowering annual suitable as a bedding plant or as a cut flower.

Culture

Prefers full sun in a temperate climate. Flowers best in fertile, moist, well-drained and slightly alkaline soil. Frost tolerant. Protect from winds and stake as required. Propagate from seed. Susceptible to aphids, mildew and rust.
