King Protea

A shrub, commonly branching from near the ground, to around 1.8metres tall. Flower heads are very large - sometimes to 18cm or more in diameter. Bracts are light to dark pink and sometimes red, outer bracts are silky or hairy. Flowers are produced in summer and autumn. Cultivars include: P. cynaroides 'Alabaster', P. cynaroides 'Arctic Ice', P. cynaroides 'Attaturk', P. cynaroides 'Blood King', P. cynaroides 'Clare', P. cynaroides 'Henry VIII', P. cynaroides 'Ice King', P. cynaroides 'Imperial Monarch', P. cynaroides 'Imperial Pink', P. cynaroides 'Imperial Red', P. cynaroides 'Ivory King', P. cynaroides "Madiba', P. cynaroides 'Red Rex', P. cynaroides 'Silver Monarch', P. cynaroides 'Snow King', P. cynaroides 'Tinkerbell', P. cynaroides 'White Crown'

Garden shrub, Cut Flower, Tub Plant

Culture

Tolerates temperatures to around zero, but best protected from frost. If top growth is severely damaged, it will often regrow from roots. Provided drainage is reasonable, it responds well to watering in dry weather. It transplants easier than other proteas.
