Some evergreen but mostly deciduous shrubs and small trees; elegant branches, fine needle-like foliage (visual appearance like a conifer), small pink flowers in racemes at the tips of branches on new season’s growth.
Uses
Screening plant, windbreak, shrubbery, hedge, coastal garden plant.
Culture
Sunny open position, most soils except limy or chalky, tolerates both wet and dry climates. Prune in winter or after flowering to keep bushy by removing half of the season’s growth.
Propagation
Cuttings 12 to 18cm long planted direct into the open ground in autumn or early winter.
Cultivars
T. ramosissima: Large shrub to small tree, reddish branches, slim racemes of pink flowers in summer.
Plant Health
Hardy; few pest or disease problems of note.

Origin: Europe to East Asia and India; around 70 species.
