Pieris

Euphorbiaceae

Pieris

Evergreen shrubs, flower panicles form in autumn and open in spring to resemble lily-of-the-valley. Some have stunning red-bronze young growth tips.

Uses

Foliage plant, floral display, shrubbery, border plant.

Culture

Prefers fertile, organic lime-free soil; grows in open but sheltered position, in a rockery or even boggy soil, in part shade. Mulch plants with organic matter in spring. May be deadheaded after flowering; prune back straggly growths.

Propagation

May be propagated by cuttings, layering, or seed sown early winter or spring and kept in a cold frame. Layering works well for P. formosa if done in autumn; detach new plants after 2-3 years. Semi-hardwood cuttings may be taken in summer and kept in a cold frame.
