Bay Laurel, Sweet Bay, Bay Tree

Evergreen tree to 12m high by 9m wide. Leaves are lanceolate, dark green, glossy and aromatic. Flowers are yellow and fragrant, appearing in summer. Fruit are small black berries that appear in autumn.

Uses

Widely grown for many uses, including as a specimen tree, as a hedge, in tubs and trained as topiary. The leaves are used as a culinary herb, for potpouri and in funeral wreaths.

Culture

Prefers full sun or part shade in cool or warm climates. Does best in sheltered sites with fertile, well, drained soil. Tolerates coastal conditions and frost. Can be pruned into a hedge or for topiary. Propagate by seed in autumn or cuttings in summer.
