Common Thyme

Native to southern Europe, Thyme is an evergreen perennial groundcover or sub-shrub approx 30cm high by 30cm wide. A variable plant, it is grown as an annual in cool climates. The stem is hirsute, quadrangular and often prostrate. Leaves are green-grey, linear to elliptic, approx 15mm long and aromatic. White or pale purple flowers occur on terminal whorls during summer.

Uses

Suitable for rockeries and herb gardens, it is also grown between paving stones. Widely used as a culinary and medicinal herb.

Culture

Prefers full sun, a temperate climate and is suitable for most well-drained soils. Frost and drought tolerant. Propagate by seed in early summer, cuttings in summer or by layering.
